Ai Weiwei and Rokudenashiko at a hotel in Beijing on June 11, 2015.
Rokudenashiko meets Ai Weiwei in Beijing. Ai Weiwei, who had also been detained for obscenity in the past, was a good friend of Nashiko. Ai was later arrested and detained by Chinese authorities for political reasons (2011), and was allowed to leave China in July 2015, moving to Europe. Last year, Rokudenashiko met Ai Weiwei during his first visit to Japan in 13 years.
At the 55th Venice Biennale in 2014, Ai was in an installation of several rectangles with mini-figures from his arrest to detention, so that visitors could relive the circumstances of that time. The artist was stranded in China, so only his works were sent to be exhibited.
This work is based on the theme of minimalism in depiction, using a method of completing the work with as few steps as possible (preferably with a single stroke). It is an assertion that the more steps are added to a painting, the further away from the painstakingness of the painting itself, and in terms of his attempt to emphasize the materiality of paint to the maximum extent possible, it is a schematic reference to Greenberg and his later works. I call it "Minimal Drawing.
